A lot of times, business people find that they can no longer rely on their website developers, probably because these highly-sort-after geeks no longer have time for them or they're just out of reach. Either way, if you're running an ecommerce website, you most likely need frequent updates, which includes adding products to your website.
If your ecommerce website runs on Opencart framework version 2.x, this is your lucky day. If your website runs earlier versions of opencart framework, this guide might give you an idea of how to go about "adding new products to your website", but don't bet on it.
Let's get started:
How to add a new product to your Opencart 2.x website.
1. Browse to the admin section of your website: Type www.your-website.com/admin in your browser and press enter. If it is not available via the link, then you can send me a message or post a comment with your website address and I'll locate it for you.
2. Type your username in the username field and your password in the password field and click "Login".
3. If your login details are correct, you will be redirected to the dashboard of the admin section. On the left panel, place your cursor over the catalog menu (the second gray button from the top) and click on products.
4. To add a product, click the plus sign (+) at the top-right corner of the page.
5. In the product name field, type the product name. This will be displayed as the product name on the website. Eg. Samsung Galaxy S7
6. Type a description of the product in the Description field. This will be displayed when a product in opened.
7. In the Meta Tag field, type the product name again. This is displayed as the title when it shows on search engines.
8. In the Meta Tag Description field, type the product description again. This is displayed as the description when it shows on search engines.
9. In the Meta Tag Keywords field, type keywords related to the product, separated by a comma. This is used by search engines to display products.
10. In the Product Tags field, type keywords related to the product, separated by a comma.
11. Click the Data tab at the top of the page to enter product data.
12. Click the Image field to enter the products main image. Then click the pencil sign that shows up to change the image. Then click the products folder to see available product images and add new ones. Then select the preferred image.
13. In the Model field, type the model of the product. Example: sgs7-001 . The model should be unique to the product as the system uses this to identify the product.
14. In the Price field, enter the price of the product. Not discount price. No commas.
15. In the Tax Class field select “Taxable Goods”.
16. In the Quantity field, enter the number of the product available.
17. In the Minimum Quantity field. Enter the minimum quantity of the product that can be bought.
18. In the Subtract Stock field, select yes.
19. In the Out of Stock Status field select “Out of Stock”.
20. Then click the Links tab at the top of the page. This is where you select the pages where the product should be displayed.
21. In the Categories field, type the name of the categories where it should be displayed and select the name from the drop-down.
Example: For a Casual Shoe for men, type men and click “Men”. Type shoes and click “Men > Shoes”. Type shoes and click “Men > Shoes > Shoes (Casual)”. The shoe will be displayed in the “Men page”, the “Men Shoes” page and the “Men Casual Shoes” page.
22. In the Related Products field, start typing the name of some related products and select them from the drop-down.
23. Then click the Option tab at the top of the page. This is where you add available variation like size and color.
24. In the Option field on the left type size and click Size from the drop-down.
25. In the Required field select “Yes”.
26. In the Option Value field select the available size.
27. In the Quantity field type the quantity of the size that’s available.
28. In the Subtract Stock field, select Yes.
29. Then click the Special tab at the top of the page. This is where you add a new special price for the product.
30. Click the plus sign (+) to add a new special price.
31. In the Customer Group field select “Default”.
32. In the Priority field enter “1”.
33. In the Price field enter the new special price. No commas.
34. In the Date Start field, enter the date the special price should take effect.
35. In the Date End field, enter the date the special price should stop.
36. Then click the image tab at the top of the page. This is where you add other images of the product.
37. Click the (+) sign to add a new image.
38. In the Image field, click the image and click the pencil symbol.
39. Click the Products folder and select the image.
40. Repeat these steps for other new images.
41. Then click the save button at the top of the page.
42. Congratulations! You just added a new product to your online store. To add another new product, start from one again.
